AkronWhen a roof dies young, the autopsy usually blames the weather. But a surprising share of early roof failure has nothing to do with what falls on the shingles — it's what rises beneath them. An attic that can't breathe is a slow oven, and the shingles above it are on the rack.
Shingles are engineered for heat from one direction: the sun. In a poorly ventilated attic, summer temperatures soar far past outdoor readings, and the shingle's asphalt gets baked from below at the same time. The binders that hold granules and give the shingle flexibility break down years early. Curling, cracking, and bald patches on a roof that's too young for them is the signature.
Shingle manufacturers know exactly what heat does — it's why most warranties explicitly require adequate ventilation. A roof that fails early over a sealed attic can find its warranty claim denied on exactly those grounds. Ventilation isn't an upgrade; it's part of the roof system being valid at all.
Heat isn't the only issue. In cold months, household moisture rises into a poorly vented attic and condenses on the cold underside of the deck — feeding mold, rusting nails, and dampening insulation until it sags and stops working. The same missing airflow causes both seasons' damage.
Proper ventilation is a loop: cool air enters low through soffit vents, travels up the underside of the deck, and exits high through ridge or other exhaust vents. Break the loop anywhere — painted-shut soffits, insulation blocking the eaves, exhaust with no intake — and the attic returns to oven mode.
